Natal Astrology vs. Transit Astrology
When the same terms describe different things 😑
What I’m about to share feels almost painfully obvious in hindsight. But when I was deep in the weeds of my earliest astrology days—trying to memorize the planets, wrap my head around the zodiac signs, figure out what houses were—I wish someone had said this plainly:
Astrology serves two very distinct purposes that use almost identical language. The difference is context, only we beginners don’t know that there is context.
Many astrologers on TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube will discuss both contexts, often times in alternating posts, forgetting that we newbies don’t understand that “Sun in Leo” can refer to either to person who was born on July 30th or to the fact that it’s currently mid-August.
I’ll explain.
So the first context of astrology is what we call natal astrology. This is the “personality test” aspect of astrology; it’s everything you’ve heard about Scorpios being mysterious, Tauruses being stubborn…
So if you see an astrologer post something like, “Three sun signs most likely to overshare at brunch,” they’re saying that people born in late May (Gemini), early December (Sagittarius), and mid-March (Pisces) are most likely to spill their guts over mimosas. That’s natal astrology.
But later that same day, you might see the same astrologer post something like, “Mars just moved into Pisces, get ready for movement with meaning!”
In that case they’re not talking about Pisces as people. They’re saying that right now, the planet of Mars just moved into Pisces, which is going to have real-world implication for all of us, whether or not we’re a Pisces. That’s transit astrology.
Let’s break them down a bit further.
Natal Astrology
Natal astrology looks at where the planets were the moment you were born to determine what astrology says about you, your personality, your life. It’s personal.
Some examples of natal astrology:
“Cancer Mars tend to be quietly competitive. You won’t know they’re trying to win until you’ve already lost.”
“You were born in Mercury retrograde, so you probably tend to process information inwardly before you express it…”
“I’m such a Gemini…”
If you’ve ever had a birth/natal chart reading, that’s all about natal astrology. If you’ve ever used astrology to determine what it says about you that your moon is in Capricorn, or that you’re an Aquarius Rising, that’s natal astrology.
Transit Astrology
Transits are what the planets are doing right now.
I think of transits as “Astrology current events.”
All of the same concepts apply as in natal astrology—planets, zodiac signs, angles between them—but this time it’s all about where the planets are now.
This is where you hear things like …
Mars just moved into Cancer, so you may feel more protective than assertive—action comes through emotion, not impulse.
Mercury just went retrograde, so expect delays, miscommunications, and the urge to revisit what you thought was already settled.
Welcome to Gemini Season, where curiosity spikes, attention spans dip, and everyone suddenly has five new side quests.
Note that in those examples I’m using the same terminology as in the examples above (Mars/Cancer, Mercury Retrograde, Gemini) but the context has changed.
The above Natal Astrology section, we were talking about Mars/Cancer combo as they relate to a person being born when Mars was in Cancer. In the Transit Astrology section, it’s talking about how Mars moved into Cancer today, and how that’s going to affect all of us …
So Why Does This Matter?
Well, frankly, because when you’re starting out, it’s really easy to confuse the two! Or at least it was for me.
You might read something about Mercury being in Gemini today and thinking it’s not relevant to you, because you know your Mercury is in Aquarius. But really what it’s saying is that all of our texts might be a little weird today, because Mercury’s current position is having an effect down here.
Where to Begin …
A lot of beginner resources start off by explaining the Zodiac Signs / Planets in general terms. You might read that the planets are the “actors,” the signs the “costumes,” the houses the “set pieces” and so on.
But I actually think it’s easiest to learn through context.
Want to understand yourself better? Start with your birth chart, and learn natal astrology
(👆🏻 This is my recommendation for beginners since it’s fixed/constant).
But if you’re more curious about why this week feels off? Then a toe into transits; learn where the planets are right now, and dig into what it means that Pluto is currently in Aquarius.
Over time, you can—and should—layer natal and transit astrology together. Because that’s where astrology gets rich, because transits hit people depending on their birth chart.
A Mars transit through Cancer is going to feel different for you if it’s moving through your 10th house (you might feel more sensitive about work or recognition) versus your 4th house (family dynamics or home stress may flare up).
Mercury Retrograde in Leo will feel different depending on your Rising sign. For Taurus, it might land in your 4th house—expect old family conversations or home repairs. For Leo, it’s likely in your 1st—so personal expression, communication, or appearance may feel off. For Scorpio Risings, it could hit the 10th, bringing confusion around career plans or public image.
But for now, I recommend starting with one concept: Learn what it means that we’re currently in Gemini season … or google what it means Venus was in Libra when you were born.
Astrology is a deeply spiritual practice. We’re meant to make it personal.
