Astrology 101

This page is the astrology guide I wish I’d had when I started. It uses specific, real-world language—not because I think every Taurus bakes bread or every Scorpio has a burner phone—but because it’s easier to understand astrology when you can visualize how it plays out in actual human behavior, not just a mushy “Aries are bold” stereotype.

These are the basic building blocks of how astrology works, and everything you need to know for understanding why “I’m a Virgo” barely scratches the surface.

Astrology Basics

Everyone’s favorite part of astrology (so meme friendly!), let’s meet the infamous Zodiac signs.

If you’re a little unclear on what the signs actually mean, start here. Otherwise, these guides are meant to dive a bit deeper into each sign’s energy.

Written in weirdly-specific terms plus a Taylor Swift song pairing, because Pisces = dreamy and Taurus = stubborn descriptors are so tired.

Also, spoiler alert, you have more than one Zodiac energy. Check out the planets section below to see all the many reasons you might not feel like a Scorpio even though you were born in early November.

The Zodiac Signs

The signs get all the hype, but it’s the planets doing the actual work. They’re the ones calling the shots.

If you haven’t yet read our guide to your birth chart or planets, here’s a hint: Sun is the sign you “know.”

The Planets

If planets show what’s happening, houses show where it’s going down.

They take all that energy and give it a setting—your bank account, your inbox, your awkward family dinner, your big career leap. Without houses, your chart is just floating potential with no address.

The Houses

Most astrologers would count the concepts in this section as basic astrology, and they’re not wrong.

But I still recommend tackling this section only after you’re completely comfortable with the concepts of planets, signs, and houses.

Something in your chart not adding up?

Don’t panic. It’s completely normal to have a placement that doesn’t feel at all like you. Checkout my troubleshooting guide to figure out why this might be true.
