THe Zodiac Signs — Overview

Aka, astrology’s vibes

Zodiac signs are probably the most well-known part of astrology. Even if you’ve never pulled up a birth chart, you probably know your “sign,” based on your birthday.

If you think that’s the extent of astrology, I’m about to blow your mind:

You actually have more than one sign, sort of.

If you were born in early May, the sun was in Taurus, which means you’re a Taurus, but if the moon was in Capricorn, you’re also a Capricorn.

And actually, it’s a bit confusing that we treat them as nouns at all, because the Zodiac signs are adjectives (and sometimes adverbs).—You’re not a Leo, you’re a Leo Sun. Or a Pisces Moon. Or an Aquarius Ascendant.

(Though, even professional astrologers often default to “I’m an X” meaning your sun sign, without specifying the sun part).

The Zodiac sign associated with each planet describes the placement. For example, Mercury in Aries means your style of communicating has Aries flavor: direct, fast, decisive, sometimes saying the quiet part out loud.

I think of the Zodiac signs as energies or vibes, and we’re all made up of multiple energies.

How the Energies of 12 Signs Show up in Real Life

Aries – The Quick Start

Texts you back in 2 seconds or never. Thinks best while moving. Will try anything once, but probably won’t finish the book.

Taurus – The Sensory Editor

Knows exactly what they want on a bagel and will wait an hour to get it. Needs the right lighting to feel functional. Doesn't love change unless they planned it.

Gemini – The Verbal Processor

Changes opinions mid-sentence. Has three tabs open just to tell one story. Collects ideas the way some people collect magnets.

Cancer – The Quiet Radar

Feels the shift in someone’s tone before the person does. Remembers the thing you said offhand six months ago. Recharges by retreating into a soft space—emotionally or literally.

Leo – The Creative Director

Curates their camera roll like a gallery. Brings the vibe, then complains that no one else did. Feels most alive when seen on purpose.

Virgo – The Systems Whisperer

Fixes a process before you knew it was broken. Has a running mental checklist at all times. Says “it’s fine” and then reorganizes everything the next morning.

Libra – The Stylist

Doesn’t just dress well—arranges a conversation like a tablescape. Loves a well-balanced hangout. Makes decisions by thinking out loud (to three people).

Scorpio – The Strategic Sensor

Plays the long game. Sees the subtext before the text arrives. Doesn't reveal much unless you've earned the director’s cut.

Sagittarius – The Meaning Hunter

Craves context, not just content. Turns a weekend trip into a life philosophy. Loves telling a story, even if they forget how it ends.

Capricorn – The Long-Game Architect

Takes five minutes to warm up and five years to forget a slight. Has a to-do list for things other people treat as vibes. Feels safest when there's a plan.

Aquarius – The Pattern Disruptor

Invents the game just to question the rules. Will zig where others zag. Connects dots no one else notices—then questions why no one gets it.

Pisces – The Subtle Channel

Tunes in emotionally like it’s radio static. Has three dream projects they haven’t told anyone about. Might look spacey, but they’re absorbing everything.

Every planet in your chart lives in one of the above 12 signs—some of us even have multiple planets in a single sign, which can explain things like we’ve spent our whole life thinking we’re a Scorpio because we were born in October, but we’ve always been extremely chatty and cheerful. It could be because Mars, Mercury and Rising are all in Gemini!

Regardless, we’re all made up of multiple Zodiac energies. Some are generally stronger (Sun, Moon and Rising tend to say more about out personality than our Pluto sign which we share with an entire generation), but understanding all the Zodiac energies is a great place to begin your astrology journey.
